Child & Adolescent Treatment
Child Phase I Interceptive Treatment (Age 7-10)
When some primary teeth (also called baby teeth) are still present, treatment may be indicated in some children to correct problems like severe overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Certain types of jaw growth modification can be very effective at this age when the face is actively growing. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children be screened by an orthodontist around age 7 to diagnose problems requiring interceptive treatment.
Adolescent Full Braces
Full braces, or comprehensive treatment, usually occurs when the adult teeth have erupted, typically around 11 to 12 years of age. In cases where Phase I Interceptive treatment is necessary, comprehensive Phase II is initiated at this time. The goal of comprehensive treatment is to achieve an ideal occlusion with of all of the permanent teeth.
Orthodontics isn’t just for kids anymore. Tooth alignment can be changed at any age if your gums and bone structure are healthy. We offer a variety of treatments for adults including less noticeable tooth-colored braces, and aligners like “Invisalign”. Your new smile can begin today! Orthodontic treatment at later stages of life can dramatically improve your personal appearance and self-esteem. Improving the health of your teeth and gums is equally important. Crooked teeth and a bad bite can contribute to gum and bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal wear of the tooth enamel and surfaces, headaches, and jaw joint (TMJ/TMD) pain.
The Damon System™ , named after its inventor, Dr. Dwight Damon, employs innovative low friction brackets or braces and low force, flexible “memory” wire to move teeth and surrounding bone in remarkable ways. Unlike traditional braces, Damon Braces do not use elastic ties to attach the brackets to the orthodontic wire. A sliding door or gate closes to hold the bracket to the wire. The passive door does not press on the wire and produces much less friction as the tooth slides along the wire during orthodontic tooth movement. Eliminating the individual elastic ties on each bracket virtually eliminates frictional binding, greatly reducing the force necessary to move teeth. The very light forces allow us to treat many severely crowded cases without invasive procedures like tooth extraction and expanders. In addition, teeth have been shown to move faster with less discomfort with light forces.
Dr. Barron is a Damon System Premiere Provider and one of only a few orthodontists chosen by Dr. Dwight Damon to be part of his original Damon Champion Group. As a certified Damon Educator, Dr. Barron teaches other orthodontists how to use the Damon System ™ and he has also co-authored a series of university educational modules used to teach the technique to orthodontic students around the world.

Patient with Barely Noticeable Damon Clear Braces on Her Teeth
Facial imbalances caused by jaw growth problems can be successfully treated with orthopedic appliances in younger actively growing patients. Timely detection and intervention is critical because once jaw growth is complete, orthopedic correction is no longer possible and more invasive procedures like jaw surgery may be required to move the jaws into alignment.
Class II Jaw Growth
Lower jaw growth lags behind the upper with protruding upper front teeth and recessed chin
Class II Jaw Growth Correction: Herbst Appliance
The pistons of the Herbst Appliance gradually advance the lower jaw encouraging forward growth. A reciprocal backward force is delivered to the upper jaw. The Herbst appliance is fixed in place for 10 to 12 months.
Class III Jaw Growth
Lower jaw overgrows the upper jaw causing a protruding chin and underbite
Class III Jaw Growth Correction: Protraction Headgear
The Protraction Headgear delivers an orthopedic force to accelerate forward growth of the upper jaw with a pulling force attached to the outer framework. The appliance is worn at home in the evening and sleeping for 10 to 12 months.
Surgical orthodontics is a combined treatment by orthodontists and oral surgeons to correct jaw abnormalities in non-growing adult patients.
The orthodontist initially levels and aligns the teeth in the jawbone, then the oral surgeon positions the jaws into a more normal position to allow the bite to come together ideally. This procedure results in the improved ability to chew, speak, and breathe, while also delivering tremendous facial aesthetics.
We embrace the latest in orthodontic technologies to reduce the overall need for this method, however it can still be required in those with improper bites, as well as those with facial aesthetic concerns.
